The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) collects taxes from citizens through their income, purchases, property, businesses, etc. Taxes are taken as a percentage of the price or amount of the taxed item. Taxes are used for health care, education, pensions, and human services. It is very difficult to find out exactly how much of our taxes is spent on what. The IRS should make it easier to understand what our tax dollars are being spent on. We the people should be provided with receipts with the amounts of money that went towards our city. Our taxes pay for the aldermen, governor, mayor and other politicians in office, so it’s understood that they are of service to us.
Taxes are collected through any documented money that is spent, given, or earned even the lottery. Some of the mediums for tax collections are houses/property taxes, purchases, sales, and income. Taxes are collected to make our city a better place and to provide things that would benefit our communities. Taxes are distributed according to need. According to the Fiscal Year 2017 Budget Operations Book, all funds spent are $68.5 Billion. Although theses number are given to us, there should be evidence or a receipt of the distribution. There should be a public record of this information.
During my research it was very difficult to find clear and direct information about the distribution of tax dollars in the city of Chicago. When I searched the IRS there was hardly any info available that was not on Wikipedia. The IRS should have more information on the books, for the citizens that care about where their money is going, about who they are benefiting and how. We need proof of what is being done throughout our city to be accessed publicly. Citizens should be provided with a statement that enlist the details of distribution of tax dollars citywide. Libraries should have sections dedicated to the government works and literature. We shouldn’t be left in the dark about our money.
